Hook Champ has appeared from no where, it is RockCat Games 2nd iPhone/iPod game and one that many are enjoying. It’s cute kind of mini Indiana Jones relic finding hero has struck a cord with gamers thanks to some good controls and a distinctive look.
Hook Champ is a physics platformer about using a grappling hook to swing through haunted ruins at high speeds. Easy to pick up and play, challenging to master the final levels. Highly replayable, with a retro style and the most hat fashion customization of any game on the market.

- Easy to Learn Controls: Hold above your character’s head to latch your hook onto surfaces, release to let go, hold below your character’s head to walk in that direction. These simple controls will let you run, climb, jump, swing, and fling yourself to safety.

Hook Champ is all about swinging around, yes with a grappling hook, hence the name! You need to use the grappling hook to swing and escape from various haunted ruins as quickly as you can before you get eaten by a ghost who follows you along on the levels you are playing though.
The game controls are very easy to use, you touch the bottom right or left corners of the screen to make your character run in that direction, then you tap the top part of the screen to throw out your grappling hock into the direction you tap on. Releasing your finger detaches the hook, which you can then tap again on a different area of the screen to carry on swinging through the level.
The game has online and offline leaderboards which is once again a good thing. The more you progress through the levels you can buy various upgrades for your character. These upgrades are bought with coins that you collect in the levels you are going though, the more you collect,the more you can spend. The upgrades allow you to run faster, swing the hook faster etc, there are even some clothing items to wear which is a nice touch to the game.
Graphically the game has been designed in a pixel style, this looks great and the loading times are almost non-noticeable on my iPhone 3GS. Sound is basic, but the game doesn’t really require the sound to be anything more than that.
Overall I can’t find much to fault in Hook Champ, it is cheap, great looking, a lot of fun and has some depth to it thanks to the upgrade options. If I can find anything wrong it is that I would have liked a mid-way save point, but considering most of the levels are small this is a tiny complaint.
