In this How To we look at WordPress’ image and gallery management as it pertains to posts. We will also discuss the free Gallery and Caption enhancement plugin and how to use it effectively.

For starters, it is assumed that you use the WordPress editor for authoring your posts. Within WordPress, there are two editors that live side-by-side: Visual and HTML. We will cover both.

Note that this site uses dyerware’s Gallery and Caption plugin that enhances WordPress’ imagery, and we assume you have this plugin. It allows for mini galleries and creates interesting animations when viewing images. WordPress.org’s download and info for this plugin can be found here: Gallery and Caption. There are lots of configuration options, so if you download it you will have to change some settings to get the exact behavior seen here.

Adding Images to your Post

Lets jump right to adding a few images. Take a look at the media toolbar.

Upload / Insert media toolbar. This is the same regardless of your editor.

Hover your mouse over the square icon and its tooltip should indicate ‘add an image’. Click on this button and a file browser will appear. Here, you can load images from your PC/Mac, a website URL, your local post gallery, or your WordPress Media Library (we will ignore that for now). The post gallery is where you access all the images you have already uploaded to the post. So don’t worry if you upload and nothing appears! All your images hang around in the post’s own personal gallery.

Load an image from your computer and once completed, you will see the post gallery inventory window.

Lets locate the caption field for the image and insert some text. I have outlined in red the caption field in the dialog.

Next, decide the resolution of the image in your post. You can pick thumbnail, medium, large, or full size. The image is reduced and clipped to fit this space, however ‘Gallery and Caption’ will use the full size when showing the image regardless of the size used in the post. If you are not using ‘Gallery and Caption’, the user can click on the image and be taken to another page where the full image is available.

When done, click on the button labelled ‘insert into post’. I have outlined the insert button in red. Voila! You have inserted an image wherever your cursor was. You probably want to avoid cutting and pasting in the visual editor as things can get delicate, however the HTML editor is very easy and reliable when it comes to that. Just make sure you select all the HTML code associated with the image.

Mini Galleries

You notice the containers many of the images in this article are grouped in? This is an addition by ‘Gallery and Caption’, and its easy to use. The only limitation is that the images you want in the container are captioned. The easiest way to add the container effect is to use the captiongroup toolbar button that the plugin adds to the editor, but lets do things manually.

In either editor, add [captiongroup] just in front of the first image and [/captiongroup] after the last of the images.

Now, while we happen to only have two images per mini gallery, you can have as many as you want. You can also control how many columns the container will have, but I usually just use the default which you can specify on the plugin settings page.

The Gallery

Now the big kahuna. You can dump your entire local image inventory in one shot using the command [gallery] anywhere in your post. I encourage you to use ‘Gallery and Caption’ mini galleries throughout your post rather than one blob of images at the end if anything for the sake of promoting good discussion, however the gallery is a good thing to have as a one stop shop location for all of the images.

Conclusion

The crazy text in the HTML editor, and the oddly delicate WYSIWYG flavor of the visual editor both provide ways to add images. But regardless of your editor choice, you should get to know the gallery mechanism: Add images, use the gallery access to specify captions and whatnot, and insert them as shown.

Gaming revenue among all paid titles was estimated at a total of $900,000 in January and February alone. Compared to 2009, this is a great start to 2010, as gaming revenue in November and December totaled in at just over $600,000. The market has grown leaps and bounds so far in 2010, adding 1,200 new gaming titles in just 2 months.

Despite being out for almost a year, Robo Defense has maintained its stranglehold on the #1 position, it has maintained the top ranking since we began tracking Android gaming 7 months ago. Robo Defense saw an estimated 24,000 downloads at $2.99. Yongzh’s video game emulators control rankings #2 through #4 with SNESoid, NESoid, and GameBoid with a total of 30,000 downloads between all 3 versions. Finally, Fishing simulator ‘Fishin’ 2 Go’ reels in the #5 spot at 16,000 downloads at the new $2.25 price point. Formerly, has seen price increases from $1.50 in early December, to its current price of $2.25.

Android Users Still Not Buying Apps

Given the recent insights into handset proliferation, FADE LLC believes that the average Android user is spending just 6.1 cents on gaming in the month of February, and $0.50 among all applications. Comparatively, iPhone users are spending an estimated $1.00 per user on video gaming applications per month and approximately $5.00 among all applications. Although the average revenue per user is up from 4-5 cents during most of 2009, it is still facing weak revenue compared to other handsets.

As per the report, FADE LLC does not believe that the fault lies on the quality, or depth of applications, but on 4 major factors:
• Payment UI
• Android 1.5 in use on ~30% of available handsets
• Limited number of paid countries
• Inability to download applications to SD cards
On the opposite end of the spectrum, free applications are doing remarkably well, as 98.9% of all applications downloaded are free apps. We estimate that over 250,000,000 applications have been downloaded (289,000,000 to be exact). Such numbers are robust for an operating system that has approximately 8 million users, pointing to an average attach ratio of 35 applications per user.

Wii recorded another strong month of sales, despite being hindered by continued product shortages that affected U.S. retail locations during the month. Even so, Nintendo still managed to sell more than 397,000 Wii systems at retail for the month.

With these sales through the end of February, consumers have already purchased 1.9 million Nintendo hardware systems in 2010 alone.

“Here in its sixth year of availability, Nintendo DS continues to expand the appeal of video games,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “We expect the public’s appetite for these systems will grow even more when we introduce our new extra-large model, the Nintendo DSi XL, on March 28.”

Three of the top five best-selling games of February play on Nintendo systems. These include New Super Mario Bros.™ Wii at No. 1 with more than 555,000 sold, Ubisoft’s Just Dance™ at No. 4 with more than 275,000 sold and Wii Sports Resort™ with the Wii MotionPlus™ accessory at No. 5 with more than 272,000 sold.

In Avalon Code the world is coming to an end, and gamers take control of Yumil or Tia and fill the Book of Prophecy with a record of everything that’s worth saving – people, enemies, flowers, weapons and objects – to create a new world with.

In a unique twist on the RPG genre, gamers can also alter the attributes of items listed in the Book of Prophecy as every item, person and monster within the world can be broken down into a simple DNA sequence. And by manipulating this DNA, players can change the makeup of many things – including affecting enemy attributes, changing how objects behave and interact.

At the beginning, four elemental spirits guide the gamer along the way explaining how to use the Book of Prophecy and how to fight, and as the game progress more spirits join the player in their quest to collect as many items as possible.

With over 20 hours of gameplay, Avalon Code is a vast, beautiful and technically impressive game, and the gameplay is enriched by an orchestral soundtrack and emotive voice acting.

Way of the Samurai 3 will appeal to fans of both the series and RPGs, offering players a massive open ended world to roam around. Set in feudal Japan gamers must decide which is the right path to take; side with one of three warring factions – Fujimori clan, Sakurai clan or Takadane villagers – or go it alone, killing anyone who gets in the way.

Way of the Samurai 3 encourages gamers to carve their own way through the game by choosing their own dialogue and actions, which can result in over 15 different endings.  Starting off as ‘nameless’, players can create their own samurai from different styles of heads and bodies, then it’s up to the gamer to create a reputation, rise up the ranks and claim one of 50 different titles.

In total there are eight areas to explore: Amana Castle, Takadane Village, Monori Castle, Kuchihagahara, Guard Gate, Posting Station, Omiki Town and The Road and, in a first for the series, players can also draw their sword during any cutscene to commence battle.

While Way of the Samurai 3 focuses heavily on sword combat, there are over 100 weapons to choose, from swords and spears through to ‘joke’ weapons such as tuna and short green onion. There’s also a unique Original Blade Creation tool, providing over 200 parts to create the ultimate weapon.

In addition, there are various sword fighting combinations to learn, unlockable items to find and options to customise characters with a variety of items gained by playing the game again and again.

As the official game of the 2010 FIA FORMULA ONE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP™, F1 2010 will include all of the official teams, drivers and circuits from the coming season. F1 2010 will feature the return of seven times FORMULA 1 Drivers’ World Champion Michael Schumacher, the introduction of several new teams, and the brand new Korean International Circuit that will host the 2010 FORMULA 1 KOREAN GRAND PRIX.

The September launch will see F1 2010 become the first official FORMULA ONE game to appear for Xbox 360 and marks the return of FORMULA ONE to PC after an eight year absence. The arrival of the HD editions of FORMULA ONE follows Codemasters’ extremely successful launch of F1 2009 for Wii and PSP, which became a top five best seller throughout the past holiday period.

In F1 2010 gamers will take on the full, expanded grid in a variety of game modes including GRAND PRIX, Championship, Time Trial and an extensive, innovative Career mode. F1 2010will also feature a highly advanced damage model, fully dynamic weather system and extensive competitive multiplayer options.

In production at Codemasters Studios Birmingham, F1 2010 is being developed using the EGO Game Technology Platform, Codemasters’ proprietary tech that powered the critically acclaimed, million-plus selling Colin McRae: DiRT 2 and Race Driver: GRID. The award-winning technology has been further developed to accurately recreate the unique aerodynamics and handling of 200MPH+ FORMULA ONE cars. The tech combined with Codemasters’ unprecedented access to FORMULA ONE teams and drivers will ensure that F1 2010 delivers the most authentic FORMULA ONE racing experience yet. F1 2010 will be released September 2010 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Games for Windows.

The mobile companion application, described by early reviewers as “game changing,” allows Fallen Earth players in-game and real-time access to several key features of the MMOG from their mobile phone. Similar to the upcoming iPhone application, the app will enable players on other mobile devices to log in to the live Fallen Earth server and interact with their character(s) and other players via several different modules such as Chat, Crafting and the Auction House.

“People have been talking about interconnectivity between MMOGs and mobile devices for a long time, but until now, no one has gone so far as to build an app that provides real-time interaction to this level,” said Jim Hettinger, CEO of Icarus Studios. “Just the ability to chat with members of your clan in-game from your mobile phone is a huge benefit, but this product does so much more than that.”

In addition to providing the ability to chat and send and receive in-game mail, the app allows users to perform a number of other tasks, such as:

• Manage crafting queue and craft items
• Access all of the in-game features of the Auction House
• Interact with clan members
• View character profiles
• View the world map

“There are so many other cool features we can pull from the game and bring to the mobile phone,” commented Doug Dyer, President of AFK Interactive. “We’ve built a powerful platform based on commercially-launched technology that’s taken years to develop. This platform enables the app to be run on low-end to high-end mobile devices and will be able to deliver everything from interactive game wikis to virtual goods storefronts that support multiple revenue models and integrated billing. This is the next direction for online games.”

The Fallen Earth mobile companion app will be available for download from theFallen Earth website in Q2. AFK Interactive will continue to support the product across new devices and operating systems on an ongoing basis. In addition, upgraded versions of the app with new feature modules are planned for the future.

Following the availability of the upcoming applications, several of the Fallen Earth mobile app features will be made available via the Fallen Earth website for players without a compatible mobile device.

Providing a glimpse at the new application, AFK Interactive will be offering demonstrations at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco March 11-13 in Booth #712. Icarus Studios team members will also be on site demonstrating the soon-to-be-released iPhone application.

In TERA, players master their destiny in a richly detailed game world with a pioneering dynamic combat system. Gamers will select a team and square off to try and bring home The Ryder Cup for their squad in Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 11 on all console platforms. The Ryder Cup is one of the last great sporting events to be founded in prestige rather than prize money. Choose from the U.S. or European squad and participate in the various competition formats – foursomes where players hit alternate shots, fourballs and singles which traditionally bring the biennial event to a close with players going head to head. When playing The Ryder Cup mode offline, gamers will have the option to swap matches, thus giving you the ultimate control over the outcomes of other matches.

The Ryder Cup, a competition hosted by Ryder Cup Europe LLP and the PGA of America, brings together the best American and European golfers in a team competition format, and the cover of Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 11 is a direct reflection of the tournament – as Tiger Woods denotes the U.S. team and Rory McIlroy represents the Europeans.
